Best of the week: 24 July

VivekWLonely Planet author

The week in travel started with a bang: around the world, the astronomically minded commemorated the 40th anniversary of the moon landing. Our community went loony, sharing moon-themed songs and discussing moon travel tech. Meanwhile, one of our authors imagined what a trip to our friendly neighbourhood satellite might look like. Back on the ground, you were fans of our list of the most lunar-like landscapes on Earth.

Three quarter moon rise.

The ultimate travel experience?

Looking up continued as a theme. Author Joshua Samuel Brown took in the total solar eclipse from his base in Taipei (handy hint: ‘Take pictures of children watching the eclipse…everyone loves stuff like that’).

People looking up! Always a winner.

Hot on the heels of his post on the 44 little travel rules no one tells you, Robert Reid came through with another popular list: the 47 dumb things he’s done while travelling.

Robert: no regrets. Kind of.

We’ve been counting down the top 10 travel secrets from the UK edition of Lonely Planet Magazine. Curious? Start at number 10. Here’s a hint:

Caves that are home to bats and swifts and were also hideouts for the Japanese during the Allied invasion of Borneo in WW2, Kinabatangan River

Hmmm...where could this be?

And finally, the hot topic of debate towards the end of the week were the seven natural wonders of the world. We provided our take on what might make the final list – but there are a lot of worthy contenders.

South Rim of Grand Canyon.

Natural wonder - one of Vivek's personal favourites

Hope you enjoyed the week as much as we did.
