Best of the week: 16 October
Reneé BergereLonely Planet author
It’s been the week for griping here at lonelyplanet.com. Seems everyone’s got something they need to get off their chest.
Apparently, you’re not fans of the hordes of tourists that flock to Thailand. Thorn Tree Forum member mangoholic2 got lots of feedback on how to avoid ‘backpacker fatigue’.

Talk then turned to the hatred of flying. Turbulence, jet lag, the food? We get it. You offered lots of advice like using alternative transport, meds and pure faith.
Another annoying thing about air travel? Paying for luggage. mikemgb asked the forum for their advice on how to pack along his bicylce without paying airline fees. The idea we liked best: using Bike Friday – foldable bikes that fit into a standard airline suitcase. Genius!
By mid-week, the storm clouds had passed and everyone cheered up. Blogger Mara Vorhees gave her two cents on why everyone should start loving Detroit: chilli dogs, fusion jazz, recycled buildings and night swimming. Who knew?

The positivity continued as discussion turned to how to live the good life as a vagabond. Thorn Tree Member vagabondette wants to live like a local on the cheap with one requirement: wi-fi. Suggestions have ranged from Chile to Morocco to India to Malaysia.

But you know what really got us smiling and toe-tapping? Comparing notes on the ultimate travelling playlist. It’s time for a road trip!

Great blog post! I have a collapsible bike that I take with me wherever I go.
